Gone are the days of unflattering, high-waisted maternity trousers. Modern fashion trends highlight trousers with a very low-rise, and maternity fashions have followed suit. The trend of low-rise maternity pants will likely continue, as they are much more comfortable, and a great deal more flattering, than the full-coverage bump panel of yesterday. Because of the newer underbump panel, a pregnant woman can feel supported while still wearing a flattering pair of trousers.
Maternity trousers, when paired with a maternity blouse, are a great way for a pregnant woman to present a professional, tailored appearance. Just below the underbump panel, maternity trousers often offer a functioning fly. This feature will make dressing easier, and when zipped, will allow the trousers to fit more snugly to the body.
Other convenient features of tailored maternity trousers are side panels, side or back adjusters, and a foldable underbump panel. The soft jersey side panels offer extra support, comfort, and the adjustability that will be necessary toward the end of a pregnancy. Side or back adjusters are elastic bands hidden within the fabric of the waistband. Adjusters allow a pregnant woman to purchase the size she will grow into, and slowly let out the adjusters until she reaches that size. A foldable underbump panel can be used to lengthen the trousers, or provide more or less coverage of the bump as desired.
A drawstring waist is probably the simplest way to achieve adjustability and convenience in maternity trousers, and works nicely in casual wear. For weekend comfort, and flattering casual wear, loosely cut combats are flattering on most pregnant women. Cropped trousers are also flattering when paired with a sleeveless, or bump hugging, maternity top. No matter what style of trousers a pregnant woman desires, she can likely find it with maternity alterations, and all the comfort that implies.
