Maternity skirts can be an absolute lifesaver on days when a housedress is not appropriate, a nicer dress is too formal, and it is just too warm out to wear pants. Maternity skirts are also an excellent way to maintain a slim appearance, especially if they fall somewhere between the top of the knee and mid-calf.
The most popular style of maternity skirt offers a jersey underbump panel which adds support and comfort. Many panels are also foldable. They can be folded down to provide less coverage and a longer skirt length; or, they can be folded up over as much of the bump as is comfortable for the wearer. Some maternity skirts do not feature a panel at all, and are simply worn under the bump. This style is nice for younger mothers who might prefer to show off their fit, growing tummies.
Additional features that are often offered by maternity skirts are hidden adjustable panels, pleating, and flaring just above (or just below) the knee. Adjustability is a helpful feature in maternity wear, and allows the pregnant woman to dress her constantly changing body without purchasing many different sizes. Pleats, or a single pleat at the back of a skirt, creates a very feminine line, and highlights the beauty of the baby bump. Pleats usually create a slight flare, and flaring at the knee-line is very flattering to the pregnant form.
Skirts are always feminine, and maternity skirts even more so when they highlight the beauty of pregnancy. Paired with a flattering top, maternity skirts are one of the most comfortable, yet stylish ways for a pregnant woman to show off her new figure.
