Pregnancy is a time of accentuated femininity. Even women who rarely don dresses will likely be drawn to them when considering maternity fashions. Although the very idea of a dress is feminine, maternity dresses are not all equally flattering; there are a few things to consider when purchasing flattering, slimming maternity dresses.
It is very fashionable for a pregnant woman to show off her baby bump. Because a woman’s waist moves upward during pregnancy, dresses that feature a structured empire waistline, or high-waisted ties, allow her to show off her maternity waistline while simultaneously displaying her bump.
Mid-length dresses highlight slim legs, and are a far cry from yesterday’s tent-like maternity fashions. A woman’s legs may swell some during pregnancy, but usually not until the end of the third trimester. Until then, showing a little leg will keep a woman feeling sexy and feminine, and looking slim.
The fabric of the dress is also something to take into account when purchasing maternity dresses. While all women should seek comfort in their fashions, pregnant women require it. The skin on a woman’s stomach may become very sensitive during pregnancy, making soft, lightweight fabrics a must. Pregnant women also tend toward wearing as little clothing as is appropriate for the season. When purchasing dresses, look for styles that include a soft under-slip, so you are not required to layer, or purchase additional maternity wear.
The neckline of a maternity dress is very important. Square and scalloped necklines are very flattering for curvy figures. A V-neck will show off a, possibly newfound, womanly bust-line. And, because a woman’s back remains virtually unchanged during her pregnancy, a low or open back is also very flattering.
Lastly, women should look for versatility when purchasing maternity dresses. She should purchase reversible pieces, as well as styles that transition well from day to evening. Pregnant women will probably not purchase as many maternity clothes as non-pregnancy clothes, so it will be important for her to choose her maternity fashions wisely.
