Pregnancy is a beautiful time of enhanced femininity and womanly charm. Unfortunately, many women are unsure of how to dress their changing bodies during this time. This uncertainty can lead to oversized, unflattering clothing, or worse, an attempt to wear non-pregnancy clothing for much longer than is ideal.
Frugality may also play a role in the avoidance of quality maternity clothing. Most women’s bellies do not begin to bump until around the fourth month of pregnancy, and even then, it may be possible for her to wear her low rise jeans and skirts, as well as a few loose fitting tops. By the time maternity clothes become absolutely necessary, a thrifty woman may feel she has waited too long to spend money on disposable maternity clothing, and should now finish her pregnancy with the clothing she already has. However, fashion in pregnancy is much more important than finding something that basically “fits”. Pregnancy should be celebrated. Uncomfortably squeezing into ill-fitting clothing is never a good idea, and does not become acceptable simply because one is pregnant. And, the need for comfortable, slimming maternity clothing usually continues for months after pregnancy. It does not end the day the baby is born!
Almost as soon as a woman is pregnant, she feels pregnant. A newly pregnant woman will caress her still concave abdomen, giving away her condition. Pregnant women tend toward the comfort of maternity clothing much sooner than their bodies show. In this early stage, women often use unflattering casual wear to transition from pre-pregnant to maternity clothes. In doing so, they run the risk of becoming stuck in this awkward transition for the remainder of a sad, frumpy pregnancy. As a solution to this problem, designers of maternity clothes have come up with styles that are cute, flattering, and much more transitional than was previous maternity clothing. Today’s are not your mother’s maternity wear! Modern women can feel free to announce their pregnancies almost as soon as the pink lines fade in across the screen. No longer is there a need to hide one’s belly as it grows. The opposite is in fact true. It is perfectly acceptable, and can be very flattering, to accentuate even the tiniest bump. Instead of the tent-like maternity wear of yesterday, flattering and slimming pregnancy fashions feature the bump, in addition to the parts of a woman’s body that may remain untouched by pregnancy.
Calf-length styles are popular with women who are fortunate enough to have little or no swelling in their legs. Showing off a slim pair of legs goes a long way toward portraying an overall slim frame. And, to ensure the most flattering fit, while remaining adjustable (remember that you will keep growing until the very last days of your pregnancy), most tops will come with back ties and belts so that a pregnant woman can show off her “new” waist”. A pregnant woman does not loose her waist during pregnancy as much as it makes its way upward to just below the bra-line. Accentuating this virtually unchanging pregnancy waist will go a long way toward a slim look, as well as defining the growing baby bump. Third on the list of top-priority is a flattering neckline. Even previously flat-chested women may be surprised at their womanly silhouette during and after pregnancy. Women should take advantage of this plus of pregnancy with pretty V-necked shirts and dresses.
Not only is pregnancy and post-partum an exciting time, it comes with an exciting, flattering new wardrobe. Today’s maternity clothing is so cute and feminine, a postpartum woman should be in no hurry to return to her pre-pregnancy clothes. It’s true that maternity clothes are temporary, for the most part, but they can be purchased with this in mind: when it finally becomes necessary for you to pack away your comfortable new maternity fashions, the right purchases will ensure you are hopeful of wearing them again in the future.
